Pierre-Paul Riquet, founder of the ‘Canal du Midi’

0
Born in Béziers, Pierre-Paul Riquet is the son of a prosecutor of the assembly of states of the Languedoc region. In this capacity, the father of Pierre-Paul Riquet has supposedly originally opposed the project to create a canal linking Toulouse to Narbonne. Ironically, his son became the architect and founder of this famous Canal du Midi which now links Toulouse to Montpellier. The Archaeological Society of Béziers has paid homage to him with a statue by David d’Angers erected on the 'Allées Paul Riquet' in 1838.
