The humpback whale dives lengthily to feed or to minimize the risk of predation. It adapts physiologically to hold its breath as long as possible by the reduction of its heart rhythm, the differentiated distribution of the oxygenated blood by its organs, the exceptionally high hemoglobin and myoglobin contents in its blood and muscles. The calf's adaptation is progressive.
