The term 'Papu' was used by the early Western visitors to describe and designate the tribes which have inhabited New Guinea for at least 50,000 years. It means 'frizzy' in Portuguese and therefore defines the Papu from a single physical characteristic related to their hair despite their impressive feather head ornaments.
