The 183ft (56m) high and 8,555,290lbs (387,953kg) lighthouse of the Amédée islet is the first metal lighthouse in France. Its construction ordered by Paris in 1861 began the following year at the Buttes Chaumont in the workshops of the engineer Rigolet, trained by Eiffel. For 2 years the lighthouse therefore dominated Paris before being dismantled in 1265 pieces and transported on the river Seine to the port of Le Havre from where it was shipped to New Caledonia.
