From its height of 183ft (56m), the metallic Amédée lighthouse - classified as a historic monument in 2007 - dominates the eponymous islet in Nouméa lagoon. Inaugurated in 1865, it has a power of 30,000 candles and a range of 24.5 nautical miles (approximately 45.3km). Originally lit with a rapeseed oil lamp, it switched to a vaporized petroleum lighting system in 1952 before being electrified by wind turbines in 1985 and by solar panels in 1994. Its fire sends two white flashes every 15 seconds.
