Inaugurated in September 1926, the Flèche d'Or (Golden Arrow) linked Paris-Nord to London-Victoria every day via Calais and Dover. It only served for about 25 years, almost until the end of the SNCF's steam era. The Flèche d'Or was an old Pacific train transformed in the Fives-Lille workshops in Tours by engineer André Chapelon to improve its performances. With 1.3 tons of coal and 2,641 gal (10,000 L) of water per 62 mi (100 km), it was soon replaced by electric or diesel traction. There are only two copies left in the world, one being in the Cité du Train in Mulhouse.
