Brown pelicans are huge, stocky seabirds. They have very long beaks with a stretchy pouch used for capturing fish. Their wings are very long and broad and are often noticeably bowed when they are gliding. They fly within 12 miles (20 km) of shores, spotting fish schools or watching for fishing boats coming back.
