The medieval city of Carcassonne in the Aude department is one of the most visited monuments of France. It is also one of the best-preserved fortified cities in Europe. Its visit may take several days and is done on foot because the city is entirely reserved for pedestrians. A walk on the ramparts offers a clear view of the Aude Valley and the Ville Basse. On the east, The Narbonnaise gate, and its two massive twin towers, stand guard on the main entrance of the city.
