Despite the difficulties of the sector and the collapse of prices, pearl farming remains an essential activity in French Polynesia from a socio-economic point of view. It namely generates 5,000 jobs in more than 800 producing farms spread across 30 islands and atolls. In 2018, Polynesia produced 8.4 million pearls.
