In the 1960s, the stained-glass windows of Saint Stephen Cathedral's north transept had to be changed. The French artist Jean Cocteau was asked to work on sketches and drew a model of the evangelists. However, he refused to visit the cathedral, and his drawings were considered to lack white and space. Outraged by the response, Cocteau complained to the Ministry of Culture in vain. He was finally entrusted with the renovation of the stained-glass windows adorning Saint Maximin's church in Metz. Marc Chagall was eventually asked to continue his work in the ambulatory of the cathedral.
