Partly dismantled in the 18th century

As a consequence of the dismantling in the 18th century of part of the château du Bas de Villarceaux, the Saint-Nicolas tower, part of the old keep, and the mill are the only remaining vestiges of the medieval fortified castle. During the Renaissance, the moat disappeared to make way for ornamental ponds. The gardens were redesigned in the Italian style. The ‘parterre sur l’eau’ was laid out, a geometric boxwood lace. Ninon de Lenclos’ pavilion has refined decorations from the 16th and 17th centuries. It was the site of Ninon’s tumultuous love affair with Louis de Mornay, Marquis of Villarceaux and close friend of Louis XIV.
