Founded in 909 and enlarged several times, Cluny Abbey in the Saône-et-Loire department became a national property during the French Revolution. It was then partially dismantled to serve as a stone quarry for the houses of the municipality. Today, visitors can see part of the large and small transepts of the Ecclesia Major, the bell tower of the Holy Water, the Jean de Bourbon chapel, the remains of the Barabans towers that framed the portal, the bases of certain capitals as well as buildings (cloister, outbuildings, common buildings, and stables) dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
