The La Méridienne is the fastest and cheapest highway from north to south in France, only the passage of the Millau Viaduct being charged. Some 208 miles (335 km) long, it runs from Clermont-Ferrand to Montpellier. A plan to open up the Massif Central was designed as soon as 1975. The public authorities decided to transform the RN9 (national road) into a highway from 1987. The project took place in several stages from 1991 to 2002. The Millau Viaduct was connected to the highway in 2004 and allowed it to cross the Tarn valley.
