The upstream basin of the Seine river is densely populated and presents a risk of flooding over a limited area. Those of 1910, 1924, and 1955 left painful traces in people's memories. Climatic and ecological issues also encouraged the construction of four large reservoir-lakes upstream of Paris. The Orient, Temple, Amance, and Der lakes now allow regulating the level of the Marne, the Aube, the Yonne, and the Seine rivers.
