With nearly 27,710 acres (10,000 ha) of wetlands, the Seine estuary is one of the three largest in France, with Loire's and Gironde's. It consists of mudflats, wet meadows, and a foreshore made up of muddy and rocky sands. The Pont de Normandie spans it in the middle, at Sandouville, and connects Le Havre to Honfleur. The bridge, inaugurated in 1995, was designed by Michel Virlogeux, an engineer who received the Albert-Caquot prize in 2006 for the whole of his career.
