Built by the Marquis and Marshal Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban from 1693, the stronghold of Mont-Dauphin in the Hautes-Alpes department is one of the twelve major Vauban sites in France listed as World Heritage by UNESCO in 2008 as military heritage. Since then, a buffer zone has been set up around the site to ensure its management, conservation, and sustainable development. The UNESCO heritage classification indeed led to an average increase in attendance of 40% for the listed sites.
