The Griffon Vulture is one of the largest raptors in France, with a wingspan up to 9.19 ft (280 cm) and a weight that varies from 13 to 22 pounds (6 to 10 kg). It is easily recognizable with its gliding and slow flight, most often in circles, and its preferred habitat is nestled in cliffs at altitudes of up to 7,220 ft (2,200 m) for some record nests. The nests of Griffon Vultures are generally placed in the highest and steepest parts of the cliffs to give the birds the perfect thermal conditions to take off and gain altitude quickly. The Griffon Vulture is a scavenging species that feeds almost exclusively on dead animals such as sheep, cows, or wild animals. From the top of its soaring flight, its keen eyesight enables it to spot corpses quickly.
