Some 1.2 miles (2 km) long and surrounded from west to east by lush greenery, Houlgate beach in the Calvados department is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Normandy. Made up of Temple beach, Houlgate beach itself, and Casino beach, it stretches from the port of Dives-sur-Mer to Villers-sur-Mer. Bordered on one side by the English Channel and on the other by villas of the Belle Époque and the Roland Garros Promenade, Houlgate beach is dominated by the cliffs of the Vaches Noires (Black Cows).
