La station est ouverte le 30 janvier 1913. Le nom de la station vient de la place des Abbesses, qui fait référence aux dirigeantes de l'abbaye des Dames de Montmartre, figures du quartier à l'époque, et dont plusieurs ont des rues à leur nom dans le 9e et dans le 18e arrondissement, comme Marguerite de Rochechouart, Louise-Émilie de La Tour d'Auvergne, Catherine de La Rochefoucauld ou Marie-Eléonore de Bellefond.
