Sa superficie de 24,7 hectares en fait un des plus grand parc géré par la ville de Paris.
Le parc prit alors le nom de la butte. « Chaumont » viendrait, selon toute hypothèse, de la contraction des mots « chauve » (calvus en latin) et « mont » (mons en latin).
De nombreux animaux y vivent,renards, hérissons, poules d'eau, mouettes...
