Lors de la guerre de 1870, de nombreux aqueducs sont détruits pendant le siège de Paris et l'eau est très chère. D'où l'idée de Richard Wallace de participer au financement des fontaines qui portent son nom et qui encore maintenant abreuvent parisiens, touristes et sdf.
Dessinées par Charles-Auguste Lebourg, les 4 femmes représentent la bonté, la simplicité, la charité et la sobriété. Deux gobelets en fer étamé retenus par des chaînettes facilitaient la consommation, retirés depuis 1952.
