The Raja Ampat archipelago is a tropical archipelago of mostly mountainous islands covered with jungle and accessible only by boat from Sorong, its air access gate. Located in the Bird's Head peninsula, it is full of white sand beaches and hidden lagoons with turquoise waters and is a delight for both divers and ornithologists. An administrative subdivision of the Indonesian province of West Papua, it had a population of 47,771 inhabitants at the 2001 census.
