Of all the archipelagoes in French Polynesia, the Gambier Islands are the farthest from Tahiti. Located at 1,000 miles from Papeete there are only re-supplied by boat. Every two weeks schooners leave Tahiti with the necessary commodities to deliver the five 5 groceries of Mangareva, the main population center of the archipelago.
