The Petit Palais is built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900, at the same time as the Grand Palais and the Alexander III bridge. In 1902, it becomes the Museum of Fine Arts of the city of Paris and is dedicated to its permanent collections. Work of Charles Girault, it is richly decorated from 1903 to 1925 by Albert Besnard and Ferdinand Humbert who pay homage to the city on the ceilings of the vestibule and on those of the north building. A peristyle garden is adorned with a Roman gallery whose ceiling bears decorations by Paul Baudoüin. The entrance gate is a masterpiece designed by the architect himself.
