At the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, the Great Bastion offers a large panorama on Alsace, the Vosges, and the Black Forest. It was the most fortified area of the fortress. Today it displays a collection of cannons from the 16th and 17th centuries. On the wooden rack of a 17th-century gun carriage, a painting represents the coat of arms of the Habsburg dynasty. That type of cannon fired 26 lbs (12 kg) cannonballs. Before its destruction in 1633, the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg was defended by 12 large artillery pieces and 66 smaller ones.
