Painted more than 14,000 years ago, the Magdalenian parietal representations visible in the Niaux cave were executed mainly in black lines with charcoal or manganese dioxide. They evoke the large mammals of the fauna of the time. The Salon Noir is a large and high room housing 80% of the cave's paintings. They mainly depict bison, numbering 54, as well as 29 horses, 15 ibex, a few deer, and even fish.
