Mulching and animal welfare

Adequate mulching of the stabling area significantly contributes to the productivity and well-being of dairy cows by increasing their lying time. The Land and Food System department of the University of British Columbia (Canada) has indeed led studies about the lying time of cows. They show that cows only lie down for eight hours a day in humidity, compared to thirteen in dry conditions. The studies also highlight the consequences on the quality of rumination and the general health of the animals that produce 0.5 gals (2 L) more milk per additional lying hour.
