'Pa'u', the Gambier's traditional drum
1
0
Inspired by the traditional drum of the Gambier archipelago, the 'pa'u' carved in a trunk of Thespesia populnea (miro) is a membranophone percussion instrument. Its partially dug-out cylindrical sound box is covered by a tense shark skin membrane. The 'pa'u' had an important function in religious rites, especially during the 'uai-kai' intended to obtain abundant harvests and the funeral ceremonies of tribal chiefs. They were made by experts called 'taurarogorogo'.
