Thanks to its highly developed sense of smell, the polar bear can detect its preys up to several kilometers away and 3.2ft (1m) under the snow. But, unable to hunt in water or on land, it must wait for the pack ice to form again in late summer to hunt again. Many of them then gather in the Hudson Bay, where the ice pack first forms, to go northward.
