The polar bear is metabolically unique in its ability to switch from a normal state to a slowed-down state in summer when there is less food available. Its white fur is an outstanding camouflage for this great sea ice hunter. It is able to stand for long hours near a hole in the sea ice, waiting for a seal to come to the surface to breathe. It then pulls it out of the water with one paw.
