The polar bear is a great seal hunter. It strikes across the sea ice in search of polynyas and channels, areas of open water favored by seals because it gives the opportunity to breathe without having to dig a hole in the ice. Despite its weight, the polar bear is able to move on the young sea ice without passing through, sliding its legs and sometimes crawling.
