The Ouaïème river flows for 21mi (34km) at the bottom of a deep valley of the Central Chain in the town of Hienghène in the North Province and empties into the Loyalty basin. Its wide mouth is known for the sandbank which bars it almost entirely and requires the use of the last ferry still in operation in New Caledonia for its crossing.
