Orschwiller and the Alsace plain

From the top of the ramparts of the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, the view extends over the entire Alsace plain. The village of Orschwiller is nestled below the Stophanberch mountain (755 metres) on which the castle has stood since the 12th century. Orschwiller (589 inhabitants in 2019) is located between Kintzheim and Saint-Hippolyte. It is the gateway to the Bas-Rhin, just as Saint-Hippolyte is the gateway to the Haut-Rhin. The Celts and then the Romans already occupied the region. Orschwiller features 296 hectares of forest (named Köpfel and Hinterwald), spread over the slopes of the mountain between the village and the castle.
