Orographic uplift and thermal convection
0
0
On the rugged island of Grande-Terre, clouds form on the eastern slope exposed to the wind by orographic uplift and generally overflow on the west coast in the afternoon. On the flat Loyalty Islands, they form by thermal convection. The warming of the soil is communicated to the air which cools as it rises and causes the water vapor to condense into unstable clouds which can cause precipitation and storms.
