Origins of the New Caledonian vegetation

The vegetation of Grande-Terre, the main island of New Caledonia, has a high rate of endemism due to the originality of its provenance. Indeed, it has many species from the flora of the super continent of Gondwana which fragmented in the Cretaceous and from which New Caledonia originated. The Gondwanian flora of the island was therefore isolated by the drowning of a large part of this continent.
