Whether they are drowned or raised above sea level, the reef terraces of the type of those of Shabadran Bay have several origins. During periods of tectonic stability, they first develop and extend laterally to the limit of emersion, then they are shaped by mechanical abrasion and by bioerosion as soon as the sea level drops by 3.2 to 6.5ft (1 to 2m).
