The village of Èze has its origin in a castellaras, a small fortified town built in the 3rd century BC at an altitude of 1,860 ft (567 m) on the heights of Mont Bastide. The stronghold was located west of the current village on the Chemin de David linking the Moyenne Corniche to the Grande Corniche. Built by the Celto-Ligurians, it was then occupied by the Romans and Gallo-Romans until the end of Antiquity.
