The Simmental is a breed of cattle originating from the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. It is called fleckvieh in Germany and Austria and razzeta d'Oropa in Italy. The breed's name derives from the valley of Simme, in Switzerland, from the name of the river that runs through it, and tal, a German word for valley. The genealogical book of the Simmental breed in France was opened in 1930 in Dijon. After World War II, it placed just behind the Normande breed countrywide, with almost 500,000 cows on the territory.
