On the way to Compostela, Rocamadour superimposes three floors representative of Ancien Régime society. Near the Alzou river stand the small houses of the people and the laity, often in cob and exposed half-timbering. Several 13th-century gates (Figuier, Salmon) give access to the village and its main street lined with shops. The city's second floor is exclusively devoted to the sanctuaries and churches built by Géraud d'Escorailles. Finally, Rocamadour's top floor houses the castle, rebuilt in the 19th century and now the seat of the diocese.
