Crocodile rescue operation
The team recently organized an unusual crocodile rescue effort. The Greater Portmore sewage ponds just outside of Kingston have provided an important artificial habitat to American crocodiles in light of habitat loss and fragmentation. In early July, one of the ponds had a blockage preventing any water flow. Due to low water levels and newly installed slippery pond liners, this caused several crocodiles to get stuck inside the dried up pond with no shelter and no prey. After some logistical planning, Treya Picking and her team installed crocodile “ladders” along the banks of the pond and are proud to report that the trapped crocodiles have successfully escaped using their ladders.
