The Plaza Athénée Hotel, located on avenue Montaigne, at number 25, was inaugurated on 20 April 1913. Its eight floors each offered sixteen rooms. The first chef in charge of the restaurant was Jacques-Léon Colombier, winner of the London Gourmet Prize. His refined cuisine attracted high society, and artists began to dine there after the show. To celebrate the Plaza Athénée’s centenary, the management buried a time capsule-like, watertight trunk under the marble of the lobby. Inside, a coffee pot, a chocolate pot and bottles of wine from the year 1913. It will be opened 25 years later, in 2038.
