The underground exploitation of ocher in mines gradually disappeared in the 1950s in favor of open-pit quarrying. In Rustrel, the last mine closed in 2003. On the nearby Devens Longs site in Gargas, the extraction of ocher continues in the open in 49.2 ft (15 m) high and 16.4 ft (5 m) wide tiers using bulldozers or mechanical shovels.
