In 1220, Bishop Conrad of Scharfenberg initiated the construction of a cathedral dedicated to Saint Stephen in Metz. The architect Pierre Perrat was entrusted with its design. It took three centuries to complete the cathedral, inaugurated in 1552. Modifications and the construction of a portal took place in the 2nd half of the 18th century. It was demolished in 1898 to restore the old door. Despite these permanent changes, true unity of style, mainly Gothic, persists in Metz Cathedral.
