One of the three strongholds of the Hautes-Alpes

Sébastien Le Prestre, Marquis de Vauban (1633-1707), military architect and engineer to King Louis XIV, commissioned or restored 160 strongholds as part of the Kingdom's fortification works. Three of them - Briançon, Château-Queyras and Mont-Dauphin - are in what is now the Hautes-Alpes department. If, in Briançon, Vauban, constrained by the topography, had to stagger the urban defenses vertically and reinforce them with a belt of forts, the location of Mont-Dauphin on a plateau enabled the construction of a true stronghold registered since 2008 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
