Sébastien Le Prestre, Marquis de Vauban (1633-1707), military architect and engineer to King Louis XIV, commissioned or restored 160 strongholds as part of the Kingdom's fortification works. Three of them - Briançon, Château-Queyras and Mont-Dauphin - are in what is now the Hautes-Alpes department.
