Glass is one of the oldest materials made by man. Appreciated at the time of Ancient Egypt, it is mentioned in the Sacred Scripture in the fifth century BC and was described by Pliny the Elder two centuries BC. The development of the base material - subsequently shaped and annealed - is done through the fusion of three raw materials naturally abundant on Earth: silicon oxide (SiO2), sodium oxide (Na2O), and calcium oxide (CaO).
