The bell tower of the Notre-Dame-des-Doms metropolis in Avignon has an important carillon of 35 bells, 15 of which can ring at full peal, making it the most elaborate bell in France after those of the cathedrals of Strasbourg and Verdun. The main bell of the metropolis (Maria de Domnis) weighs 13,889 pounds (6,300 kg) and was cast in 1848 by the Avignon founder Pierre Pierron. As for the carillon, it has been supplemented by recent donations (1980, 1984, 1988) to allow its use over three chromatic octaves.
