One of the last imperial bastions

In July 1633, the Swedish armies besieged the Haut-Kœnigsbourg. At that time, it was nothing more than a dilapidated fortress, commanded by captain Philippe of Lichtenau. The castle was part of Habsburg's side of the Holy Roman Empire. They were Catholics and supported by the Papacy. Sweden had the support of France, although Catholic, as well as the Protestant states of the Holy Roman Empire. Renowned impregnable, the castle was one of the last imperial bastions to resist. It was defended by a small garrison and sheltered the villagers of Orschwiller who had found refuge there. They refused to fight against the besiegers.
