Perched at an altitude of 3,444 feet (1,050 metres) on the Northern slopes of Puy de Sancy (6,187 feet, 1,886 metres), the Mont-Dore ski resort is sometimes nicknamed ‘Little Chamonix’ because of the sharp peaks that dominate it. The spa town was one of the first classified ski resorts following the construction of its first cable car in 1936. Established in 1962, the current cable car – whose cables can be seen in this photo – can transport 45 people in 3 to 4 minutes, from its departure at an altitude of 4,347 feet (1,325 metres) to its arrival station 1,476 feet (450 metres) higher.
