The female body was one of the major sources of inspiration for glassmaker René Lalique. In the 1930s, he had the audacity to use it as an element of ornamentation, notably for the vases Danaïdes (1926), Bacchantes (1927) or Naïades (1930). His father’s favourite theme was taken up by Marc Lalique in the 1950s. His Ondines vase in colourless crystal (1952) celebrates a water divinity from German mythology (photo). The motif lends itself well to the satin-polished finish, which gives the water in which the goddesses are moving all its transparency.
