In the 19th century, hundreds of small Marseille factories - including the current Fer à Cheval soap factory - produced Savon de Marseille as the emblematic outcome of their business. In 1856 a candle factory located on Chemin de Sainte-Marthe dedicated itself to the exclusive manufacture of Savon de Marseille before being bought in 1895 and taking the name of Savonnerie Leca. In 1953, the Leca soap factory merged with the Huileries Antonin Roux and the Savonnerie J.B Paul, then owner of the Fer à Cheval brand it operated until 1974.
